OTD 2022: Shane Warne’s sudden demise shocked the cricketing world

On 4 March 2022, the cricketing world was left in deep shock with the sudden passing of Australian legend Shane Warne at the age of 52. Warne died of a heart attack caused by atherosclerosis while holidaying on the island of Ko Samui in Thailand. An autopsy later confirmed that his death was due to natural causes. Tragically, Warne passed away on the same day as fellow Australian cricketer Rod Marsh, to whom Warne had paid tribute on social media just hours before his own death.

Six days later, Warne’s body was flown back from Thailand to Melbourne on a private aircraft. His funeral was held on 20 March 2022 at Moorabbin Oval in Melbourne, the headquarters and former home ground of St Kilda Football Club. The ceremony was attended by close family members, including his parents and three children, along with several former teammates and friends. On March 30, a grand state memorial service was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where thousands gathered to celebrate his life and extraordinary career.

Tributes poured in from across the globe. Former Australian teammates such as Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee, Matthew Hayden, Jason Gillespie, Darren Lehmann, Shane Watson, Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch paid heartfelt respects.

Cricketers from other nations also honoured Warne’s legacy, including Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan from England, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli from India, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson from New Zealand, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis from Pakistan, Graeme Smith from South Africa, and Brian Lara from the West Indies. Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle also shared a moving tribute.

Teams across formats marked his passing. The Australian women’s team wore black armbands during their 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup match against England. Similarly, the Australian men’s team and Pakistan observed a minute of silence before play on the second day of their Test match.[

Warne’s former Big Bash League franchise, the Melbourne Stars, honored him by wearing his iconic number 23 jersey. A standing ovation followed the 23rd ball of the match, and the franchise later retired the number in his memory, a lasting tribute to one of cricket’s greatest leg-spinners.
