The Indian women’s cricket team made history four years ago, on October 3, 2021, when they played Australia in a historic pink-ball Test match at the Carrara Oval. The two titans faced up in a Test match for the first time in fifteen years, and India made sure to make an impression.
The match might have ended in a draw but India had certainly outplayed the hosts across all departments. India were asked to bat first by Australia captain Meg Lanning. India made a positive start, as Smriti Mandhana hammered 127 runs in 216 balls with 22 fours and one six while Deepti Sharma contributed 66 runs with eight fours. Punam Raut (36), Shafali Verma (31) and Mithali Raj (30) made vital runs as well. For Australia, Ellyse Perry, Stella Campbell and Sophie Molineux took two wickets each.
In response, Australia made 241/9d thanks to Ellyse Perry’s 68* and Ashleigh Gardner’s 51, with Meg Lanning scoring 38 runs as Pooja Vastrakar took three wickets, while Jhulan Goswami, Meghna Singh and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each.
Shafali Verma’s 52 headlined India’s second innings score of 135/3d, with Punam Raut scoring 41*. Set 272 runs to win the Test, Australia finished on 36/2 as the two team shook hands for a draw.
Mandhana was named the Player of the Match. And although the Test finished in a draw, the game was far from level as India obviously called the shots, outperforming Australia in nearly every aspect of the game.
It was a case of fortune favoring the courageous, and while the victory evaded them, India left with their heads held high, having demonstrated that they could compete with the big guns in the most difficult conditions.
