OTD 2016 England blazed a record 444/3 against Pakistan

OTD 2016 England blazed a record 4443 against Pakistan

On this day, August 29, in 2016, England humiliated Pakistan to record the then-highest team total in the One-Day International format. The record was made in the third ODI of the five-match series at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Having already won the first two games, England were looking to win the third ODI and pocket the series against Pakistan. England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and chose to bat first against Azhar Ali’s Pakistan team.

Pakistan got an early wicket when Hasan Ali had Jason Roy caught behind by Sarfaraz Ahmed for 15 runs in 19 balls. At 33/1, Alex Hales was joined by Joe Root, and Hales unleashed fury on Pakistani batters.

It was one-way traffic once Alex Hales and Joe Root teamed up. Hales remained aggressive while Root stood guard at one end. The opener pushed the limits, sparing no one from Wahab Riaz to Mohammad Amir. The Pakistani bowlers appeared completely unprepared as he reached his 100 off just 83 deliveries.

As the visitors were further battered, Root also picked up speed. In the 37th over, Hales was removed for a career-best 171, ending the partnership. Hales faced 122 balls and hammered 22 fours and four sixes in his knock.

A ray of hope flared in the Pakistan camp when Root perished, having scored 85 in 86 balls with eight fours. However, that hope was quickly diminished as Captain Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler got together to continue the onslaught on Pakistani bowlers.

Buttler made 90* in 51 balls with seven fours and as many sixes while captain Morgan made 57* in 27 balls with three fours and five sixes as they added 161 runs in the last 13 overs and propelled England to 444/3, the highest ODI team total then. England broke Sri Lanka’s record of 443/9 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen in 2006.

Wahab Riaz went for 110 runs in his 10 overs, while Mohammad Amir gave 72 runs, and Hasan Ali gave 74 runs for his two wickets.

In response, Pakistan only managed 275 runs as Chris Woakes took 4/41 and England won the game by 169 runs.

The record would stand until June 2018, when England, again at Trent Bridge, raised the bar further by scoring 481 against Australia. England then broke the record once again when they scored 498/4 against the Netherlands in 2022.
