Mitchell Starc’s top 3 T20I spells

Mitchell Starc’s top 3 T20I spells

Mitchell Starc called time on his T20I career with an announcement on September 2, 2025. The 35-year-old brought down the curtain on a T20I career that began in 2012 in Dubai. Overall, Starc took 79 wickets with a best of 4/20 and an economy of 7.74 in 65 T20Is.

Starc was also part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad and is one of the few players to have won the ICC World Test Championship, the ICC World Cup, and the ICC T20 World Cup titles. He was known for swinging the new ball at the start and then bowling yorkers at the death, making life difficult for batters. He has retired from T20Is to focus on Test cricket and the ICC World Cup 2027. As he retires from T20Is, here are the three best T20I spells by Mitchell Starc.

Here are the top 3 T20I spells by Mitchell Starc:

3. 3/11 vs Pakistan, UAE, 2012

This was the T20I debut series of Mitchell Starc. After a sedate start to his 20-over career for Australia in the second T20I, it was actually the third and final match where Starc made impact after David Warner’s 59 and Shane Watson’s 47 powered Australia to 168/7. Tasked with defending a decent target, Starc picked up the key wickets of Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal and finished with 3/11, also dismissing Saeed Ajmal as Pakistan was bowled out for 74.

2. 3/23 vs South Africa, Cape Town, 2020

Half-centuries from David Warner and Aaron Finch, along with 30 by Steve Smith, took Australia to 193/5 in 20 overs in the series-deciding third T20I between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town in 2020. Starc rattled South Africa with quick wickets of Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis. He also took the wicket of Kagiso Rabada to finish with 3/23 as the Proteas were bowled out for 96, giving Australia a 97-run win.

1. 4/20 vs West Indies, Brisbane, 2022

David Warner made 75 and Tim David scored 42 as Australia posted 178/7 in the second T20I between Australia and West Indies in Brisbane in 2022. In the chase, West Indies were set back big time as Starc dismissed Kyle Mayers for 6 and then took care of the dangerous Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder as well. He finished the innings with the wicket of Odean Smith to register a career-best 4/20 as Australia won by 31 runs.
