ENG vs IND 2026: IND Predicted XI

India take on England in the first game of the five-match T20I series to kick off their white-ball tour in Chester-Le-Street on Wednesday, July 1. The reigning T20 World Cup champions were dented in their first assignment post the triumph, being whitewashed 2-0 by a spirited Ireland side.

Having undergone a major shake-up in leadership, and missing key names like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, the team in blue would be looking to pick up the win against a strong England side to kick off a new era in build up to defending their World Cup crown in 2028.

IND Predicted XI vs ENG, 1st T20I:

Top order: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (WK)

Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been India’s consistent opening pair in the shortest format in the recent past. The left-right combination has been difficult for bowlers to contain. Abhishek, the aggressor, has carried on the attack from ball one. Samson has alternated between anchor and aggressor depending on the situation. Samson is coming off a stellar T20 World Cup campaign, where he scored 321 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 199.37, including half-centuries in the last three matches.

Abhishek has roared into form with a 20-ball 49 against Ireland. Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, has been a revelation since his return to the side, scoring 317 runs at a strike rate of 193.29. He has added much-needed impetus to India’s top order, taking the attack to the bowlers after the openers’ blistering starts.

Middle order: Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel

If the Ireland series is to be used as a reference point, India’s middle order has been a concern area to be addressed. Skipper Shreyas Iyer, freshly appointed after Suryakumar Yadav, has struggled to get going with the bat, with scores of 3 and 10 in the two games. Iyer has proven his mettle as a skilled tactician, but he will need runs under his belt. Tilak Varma has found himself on the lower end of the form scale and is currently facing a lean run with the bat. His skill as a pace hitter is undoubted still, but he has faced issues with spin over the past year.

Shivam Dube is one of the most feared spin-hitters and has been used as a floater depending on the match situation. His bowling has left much to be desired, but his nine wickets in six matches in the recently concluded T20 Mumbai show much promise, as India look to plug the Hardik Pandya-sized gap in their team. Axar Patel had a decent outing in the IPL, but has proven to be a reliable presence with the ball for India in the shortest format. He has picked up wickets and controlled the run flow in all phases of the game, and has especially excelled at bowling in the powerplay in the recent past.

Lower Order/bowlers: Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav.

Harshit Rana was India’s joint top-wicket taker in the Ireland series. He picked up four scalps and bowled with pace and control, despite coming off a significant injury. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh assumes the responsibility of being the attack leader and also picked up four wickets against Ireland. He has looked threatening with the new ball in the powerplay and has also bowled with control in the death overs.

Ravi Bishnoi returns to the squad as India look to find a difference point in their spin attack. After spending some time on the sidelines, he will be looking to establish himself as the lead spinner in this series. Prince Yadav, coming off a stellar season in the IPL, shone on his debut for India, picking up three wickets and bowling with brilliant control and accuracy. Across the IPL, he established himself as a key strike bowler for the Lucknow Super Giants, taking wickets in all phases of the game.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (WK), Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav.
