Is over-experimentation hurting India's Test team?

After taking up the role of India’s head coach in 2024, Gautam Gambhir has taken the Men in Blue to great heights in the T20 format. However, the same cannot be said after witnessing India’s dismal performances in Tests as well as ODIs.

One of the factors that is hindering India’s performance, the experts believe, is the Gambhir-led management’s over-experimentation. There have been several changes in the batting order. Batters always like to have clarity on their roles. However, batting in different positions always keeps them guessing on which approach they should work.

Gambhir has also backed some players who have not been able to repay the faith so far. One of them is Delhi speedster Harshit Rana. The youngster was picked in the playing XI ahead of Arshdeep Singh in the first two matches of the five-match series against Australia. This move garnered widespread criticism from fans as well as critics, as Arshdeep is India’s leading wicket-taker in the shortest format.

Gambhir has also packed his side with all-rounders. While this move has worked wonders in T20Is, it has fallen flat in red-ball cricket, where specialists are still invaluable. According to reports, some players feel “insecure” about their position because of the constant experimentation.

There seems to be a lack of planning as far as the longest format is concerned. There also seems to be a haste to introduce youngsters into the setup and disregarding the experienced campaigners. While the youngsters may provide stunning results in the future, they will need time to get accustomed to the challenges of international cricket.

Indian fans always want their team to win. Will Gambhir and Co. be able to convince them to give the youngsters in his team some time to showcase their potential on the world stage? The Indian team will need to bounce back as quickly as possible as the unrest among the fans is increasing by the day, especially after the string of disappointing results in Tests.
