ENG vs SA 2025: 3 England players to watch out for in ODI series

England and South Africa will clash in a series of six limited-overs matches starting September 2. England and South Africa will play three ODIs on September 2, 4, and 7 at Leeds, Lord’s, and Southampton followed by three T20Is on September 10, 12, and 14 at Cardiff, Manchester, and Nottingham.

The England squad features a good mix of some experienced players in Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid, and Jofra Archer and youngsters like Jamie Smith, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Banton, and captain Harry Brook.

The series will be a great way for England players to get back in the international cricket mode after the Hundred tournament’s conclusion.

Here are the three England players to watch out for in the ODI series against South Africa:

1. Harry Brook

Harry Brook

England have punted on Harry Brook as their next white-ball captain, replacing Jos Buttler for the upcoming World Cup cycle. There will be the T20 World Cup in 2026 in India and Sri Lanka and the ICC World Cup in 2027 in the African nations of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Brook has a good record in limited-overs international cricket.

He has 947 runs in 29 ODIs with one century and a strike rate of 102.15. He also has 873 runs in 47 T20Is with four fifties. However, in ODIs, Brook is capable of giving the team the impetus in the middle overs and then blasting off when the final few overs begin. He is adept against both spin and pace and has all the fancy shots in his armoury as well.

2. Joe Root

Joe Root

Joe Root is the mainstay of the England ODI batting. Root, who made his England ODI debut in 2013, has 7126 runs in 180 matches at an average of 49.14 with 18 centuries and 42 fifties.

Root also handles both pace and spin well, and his ability to keep the runs going makes him the glue to keep the England middle order together. He is the best prepared England batter to tackle the threat of South Africa’s bowlers, especially their spinners in the middle overs, thanks to his experience. Root’s calming presence in the middle enables other big hitters to go about their hitting game.

3. Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer has been excellent with the ball in white-ball cricket since his return to the game. He has already achieved so much in his short England career that began in 2019. He played a crucial role in England’s 2019 World Cup win and has 54 wickets in 31 ODIs with a best of 6/40 and an economy of 5.22.

Archer will lead the England pace bowling attack with Sonny Baker, Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse, and Jamie Overton for company. Archer could trouble the South African batter with his searing pace, sharp bouncers, and pinpoint yorkers. His ability to turn the game at crucial moments with the ball makes him England’s most lethal weapon.
