Champions Trophy 2025: Predicting Afghanistan’s Playing XI for their clash against Australia

It is the final few matches in Group B of Champions Trophy 2025 tournament. Gaddafi stadium in Lahore is set to witness Afghanistan take on Australia in a key encounter that is to be played on Friday. Both sides have played two games each so far with Afghanistan having picked two points while Australia has three points.

Afghanistan shocked the cricketing world with their win over England, which knocked out Jos Buttler’s men. Ibrahim Zadran’s ton and fifer by young all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai ensured Afghanistan’s win on Wednesday. With England now out the race for the semi-finals is between three teams as we are set to witness a massive game in Lahore.

Here is the likely Afghanistan XI vs Australia:

Top order

Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Young batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz hasn’t had a great start to the tournament with the bat. Gurbaz though has shown in the past that he is a very capable batter and more than able to score big runs on the board. Ibrahim Zadran put the world on notice with his knock of 177 which is the top score by a batter in Champions Trophy history.

Middle Order

Sediqullah Atal

Sediqullah Atal has been touted as one of the best upcoming batters for Afghanistan. In eight ODI matches Atal has already scored a century and has an average of 35 with the bat. Rahmat Shah began the tournament with his knock of 90 against South Africa before scoring just 4 against England. Hasmatullah Shahidi scord 40 crucial runs in the last match against England to help his side stem the rot of early fall of wickets.

Lower-order

Azmatullah Omarzai

Azmatullah Omarzai had a game to remember with the bat and ball against England. With the bat Omarzai scored 41 runs from 31 balls and later picked 5/58 including the key wicket of Joe Root. Mohammad Nabi was the reason why Afghanistan could score big as he scored 40 off just 24 balls and also got two key wickets. Gulbadin Naib had a quiet game with the bat but will remember his match winning spell against Australia in the T20 World Cup last year.

Tail enders

Rashid Khan

The main hope for Afghanistan will be Rashid Khan, who is just one wicket away from grabbing his 200th ODI scalp. Rashid has been one of the best bowlers for his side in the white-ball format ever since his debut. Noor Ahmad bowled well and gave away just 51 runs from his 10 overs in the match against England. The one cause for concern will be Fazalhaq Farooqi, who has been a letdown with the new ball and hasn’t been at his best so far.
