One of the two most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings, is on the brink of facing elimination this season. The five-time Indian Premier League champions have managed to win only two of their opening 9 fixtures this season. The team got off to a good start in IPL 2015 with a victory against Mumbai Indians, but lost 6 consecutive matches and hasn’t been able to find its footing. The team lost its skipper, Rituraj Gaikwad, midway through the season, and the old veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni had to take over the services yet again. However, even Dhoni’s taking over as captain had made little impact as the team had lost 3 of its last four fixtures. While this may end as one of the rarest forgettable seasons for the fans of IPL’s most consistent team, CSK may find it hard to forget these three unwanted feats.
3. First home loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 17 years
Chennai Super Kings lost their first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in this edition. The loss marked the second time the yellow tigers bowed down to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their den. Batting first, RCB had put up 196 runs on the board. Chennai batters failed to pose any threat in their chase as they got bundled for 146 runs. RCB won the match by 50 runs. It was RCB’s first victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium since 2008.
2. Delhi breached the Kings Den after 15 years
Chennai Super Kings lost their third match against Delhi Capitals in this edition of the IPL. Delhi managed to beat Chennai in their home ground for the first time since 2010. CSK failed to chase a target of 184 runs set by the visitors and only managed to score 158 runs. Delhi Capitals won the match by 25 runs.
1. Five consecutive losses
Chennai Super Kings lost five back-to-back matches for the first time in the history of the competition. The previous worst was when they lost four back-to-back matches in 2010 and 2022. While the team made a sensational comeback to win the title in 2010, they failed to even make it to the playoffs in 2022. With 5 matches to go and a maximum of 10 points at stake, Chennai Super Kings cannot afford to lose any more matches as the season progresses, if they want to give themselves a chance to qualify.
