3 Reasons Why MO Lost to WF in the 12th Match of The Hundred 2025

3 Reasons Why MO Lost to WF in the 12th Match of The Hundred 2025

As the Manchester Originals set out to make a statement in Cardiff, they were able to tell from the first ball that they would be nowhere near it, with Welsh Fire having their number in The Hundred 2025. Under a modest chase of 138, the Originals quickly found themselves on the back foot with Phil Salt and Ben McKinney back to the pavilion in the first three overs, meaning they found themselves reeling at 14 for 2.

Jos Buttler offered hope with a brief 57-run cameo, but it was not enough to stall the inevitable. In 97 balls, the Originals were all out for 112, thus succumbing to a sobering 25-run defeat.

Batting Collapse

The collapse of the Originals’ batting was fatal. The early loss of Salts for 3 and McKinney not being able to get going meant that the top order never settled. Mark Chapman went for a first-ball duck, while seasoned campaigners Heinrich Klaasen and Lewis Gregory also could not reverse the situation. The middle order had moments, but it was too little and too late.

Wickets fell under pressure, and the score never reflected the chasing team’s capabilities. In a game where pacing an innings is everything,…it felt like the Originals were chasing their tails and Fire were dictating the pace.

Fire’s Game-Changing Bowling

Chris Green and Riley Meredith delivered performances that were impossible to beat. With Green taking 3 for 19 and Meredith’s crazy figures of 4 for 9, what should have been a small chase turned into a total and utter calamity.

Green gave us the full all-round performance – 19 runs from 9 balls and 2 catches – and ceremoniously left the Originals with nothing to return with for the year, whilst Meredith, with his speed and accuracy, scythed through the top order. It felt like every time a batsman attempted to pick on the bowling pair, the Fire bowler had the answer to that challenge. The Originals had nothing left to appease, and the Fire bowlers were only too happy to oblige.

Situational and Fielding Issues

Contextual elements went against the Originals. Every mistake in the field didn’t just cost them a chance but also took their momentum down with it. On the other hand, Fire would take catches without any effort while the Originals missed every half-chance while placing no pressure on Fire.

The reliance on Buttler to anchor the innings exposed their depth; once Buttler went for 21 off 43 balls at 103 for 5, the innings folded meekly and offered little resistance. The Originals didn’t adjust to the difficult Cardiff pitch, and the variable bounce and lateral movement presented challenges to making partnerships to apply any pressure on Fire’s disciplined attacks.

By the last delivery, it was clear that Manchester Originals had let a winning match slip away. Credit to Welsh Fire for an effective combination of tactical bowling, aggressive fielding, and intelligent batting that proved too much for a team that started brightly but was unable to build momentum.

The margin of defeat of 25 runs perhaps doesn’t tell the real tale – the Originals were chasing both runs and confidence and fell short on both counts. Cardiff saw a clinical performance from Fire and a warning for Originals – it’s not enough to be talented, today is but a culmination of execution, adaptability, and composure.
