3 reasons why India won 5th Test

India defeated England in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy by six runs at The Oval, levelling the series 2–2. It was a well-rounded performance, led by the bowlers and supported by crucial contributions from the batters. Here are three key reasons behind India’s thrilling victory.

Jaiswal’s gritty century in the second innings

After a quiet first innings, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal bounced back with a composed and resilient knock in the second innings. On a tricky Day 3 pitch, the left-hander held his ground and played a crucial innings, scoring 118 off 164 balls. It was his fourth Test century against England and sixth overall in his red-ball career. His innings, laced with 16 boundaries and provided India with a strong lead and laid the foundation for a defendable total.

Late flourish from Jadeja and Sundar

India’s all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar played vital roles in the lower order, both scoring crucial half-centuries (53 each) in the second innings. Sundar’s attacking approach, including eight boundaries and some smart partnerships with the tailenders, gave India the momentum they needed. Their contributions helped India set a competitive target that put pressure on England in the final innings.

Siraj’s match-winning spells

Mohammed Siraj was the standout performer with the ball, delivering tight, impactful spells in both innings. He picked up a total of nine wickets in the match, including a decisive five-wicket haul in the second innings. In the first innings, Siraj broke England’s momentum by removing key batters like Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook.

In the second innings, as England edged closer to the target, he held his nerve, dismissing Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson on the final day. His efforts not only sealed the match but also earned him the Player of the Match award. He ended up the leading wicket-taker, scalping 23 wickets in the five-match series.
