3 Reasons Why EST Lost to SUI in the 3rd T20I of Switzerland tour of Estonia 2025

3 Reasons Why EST Lost to SUI in the 3rd T20I of Switzerland tour of Estonia 2025

When the Estonians stepped up to the crease and had the task of chasing down a set target of 236 runs by the Swiss, the crowd in Tallinn had an electricity far better than any the wires were drawing from! Estonia got off to a decent start, and Habib Khan was creating havoc, hitting 90 runs from 43 balls. Unfortunately, after a fast start, the prospect of a stunning win faded just as quickly. Following an onslaught from the Swiss team and with a consistently disciplined bowling performance to boot, it ultimately extinguished any chance of an Estonia win, going down 41 runs short and leaving those gathered spectators bewildered as to what had gone wrong!

Estonia’s Middle-Order Collapse Cost Them Dearly

Firstly, Estonia’s middle order fell apart like a sandcastle in the tide of Switzerland. After the fireworks from Habib Khan and a useful cameo from Sahil Chauhan (32 off 19), the middle and lower order were not able to sustain what had been started. Once Sahil went early at 58 runs, Estonia could not sustain a run chase, and wickets fell in pairs and a few in one over.

Once a few wickets went down, there were no substantial partnerships built upon after an explosive start, and Estonia were always chasing a mounting run rate rather than putting the Swiss under pressure. This was a textbook batting collapse and, one of the major reasons why Estonia could not match the run rate of Switzerland’s run rate of 11.75 runs per over.

Harsha Deshan’s Explosive Performance Flipped the Match

Next, Harsha Deshan stepped up to be the match-winning hero for Switzerland. Deshan, as captain, played an aggressive knock of 76 off 47 balls, with six fours and four colossal sixes; he led the Swiss onslaught. Deshan was powerful with the bat, but just as powerful with the ball, as he took 1 for 26 and took the important wicket of the Estonia captain, who was scratching around.

These innings weren’t so much about timing and “the right shot” as it was sheer brute strength, which was supported by excellent contributions from Ahmed Hassan (59 off 29) and Qateel Zabiullah (32 off 13), making for a batting line-up without weakness. From the very first ball, the Swiss could score and up the run rate at will, which put massive scoreboard pressure on Estonia and made any chase impossible.

Fielding Lapses and Pressure Moments Sealed Estonia’s Fate

In the end, Estonia’s Achilles’ heel was being able to cope with pressure-packed moments, especially with regard to the fielding. The Swiss made 15 extras, of which 14 were wides. This was a sign that Estonia’s discipline had fallen away under pressure. All of the bowlers, even Khalid Niazi and Jai Sinh, who bowled good, tight spells, could not put the squeeze on the runs in the death overs either, as they went for what could be assumed to be near the 12 mark for their overs.

All of this while the critical moments of run-outs and dropped steers affected Estonia’s momentum and timing. The fielding errors allowed Switzerland to maintain its momentum and place the pressure back on Estonia. In a tight game, that is neck and neck, the slightest outer cracks become chasms that determine the match.

The finish to the game saw Estonia’s bright start dim and die as they were swept away by Switzerland. An insipid mid-order collapse, relentless batting assault from Deshan, and mixed fielding all combined to deny the host nation a famous win.
