3 reasons why Cheteshwar Pujara can still make a comeback to the Indian team

3 reasons why Cheteshwar Pujara can still make a comeback to the Indian team

The Indian team management is looking to usher in a transition in Test cricket and give opportunities to young faces. Players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are not in contention for a spot in the Test team. However, in this article, we will take a look at 3 reasons why Cheteshwar Pujara can still make a comeback in Test cricket.

Pujara’s form

After an ouster from the Indian team Pujara has made a roaring comeback in form with remarkable knocks in Ranji Trophy. In the ongoing season, Pujara has scored more than 400 runs in 3 matches at an average of 111. He also smashed an unbeaten double-century against Jharkhand which hints towards his return to form. This rich form can become a major reason for his comeback in the Test side.

Shubman Gill’s form

The Indian team is trying out Shubman Gill at No.3 position and the youngster has also expressed his intention to embrace this challenge. However, the big concern is Shubman Gill’s form in Test cricket. Gill has exhibited his potential in white-ball cricket but when it comes to red-ball cricket the youngster has not been able to gain that same momentum.

The right-handed batter has played 20 matches in his Test career where he has scored 1040 runs at an average of 30.6 which is nowhere near his average in 50-over cricket. This disappointing run of form can force the team management to go back to Pujara who is on a brilliant run-making streak.

Workload management

The available option for the No.3 position, Shubman Gill, is an all-format player for India currently. He has a crucial role to play in ODI and T20I cricket and on top of that, he also plays in IPL which adds volume to his already stacked up schedule. In the modern age, teams look to manage the workload of players in order to keep them injury-free. Looking at Shubman Gill’s involvement in other formats Pujara’s comeback might be possible.
