3 reasons why Chepauk did not help CSK in their IPL 2025 run

3 reasons why Chepauk did not help CSK in their IPL 2025 run

One of the two most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings, are facing the brink of elimination this season. The five-time champions have secured only two victories in their first nine matches. The team began positively in IPL 2015 with a win against the Mumbai Indians but has since suffered six consecutive losses and struggled to regain its momentum. Additionally, the team lost its captain, Rituraj Gaikwad, midway through the season, leading the seasoned veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take the reins once more.

3. Better Performing Opposition

One key factor affecting CSK’s home record is the need for improved planning and execution. Opposing teams have effectively developed strategies to navigate the middle overs in Chennai, an area that was once considered challenging, especially when facing CSK’s spinners. To address this, CSK batters will benefit from focusing on their techniques and strategies at the crease. For example, after Rachin Ravindra’s impressive innings in the opening match, other CSK batters have the opportunity to step up and deliver more convincing performances, which could strengthen the team’s overall game.

2. Unpredictable nature of the pitch

CSK skipper MS Dhoni disclosed during the toss against SRH that the Chepauk surface has not been the same since its re-laying in 2010. Earlier this season, head coach Stephen Fleming pointed out that the team has not enjoyed a true home advantage for quite some time. These insights may have been overlooked in previous years, especially as CSK’s home record remained largely unblemished. However, with home victories now feeling far from routine, this issue is coming to the forefront more frequently.

1. Outdated style of play

CSK’s inability to establish a consistent team combination, coupled with multiple players underperforming and an outdated playing style, is directly hindering their chances of winning matches, regardless of the venue. Unlike RCB, which manages to balance poor home performances with stellar away results, CSK’s record is dismal both at home and on the road. This lacklustre performance is a direct reflection of the subpar brand of cricket they are producing. Even if they were to play on a perfectly curated pitch that suits their needs, likely, this team would still find a way to falter and fail to seize the opportunity.
