Rohit Sharma has been named in India’s ODI squad for the three-ODI series in Australia but will no longer be the captain of the side with Shubman Gill replacing him as the new captain
Rohit, 38, has had a storied career in ODIs. He has scored over 11000 runs at an average of 48.76 and strike rate of 92.80, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties, with the highest score of 264. Rohit Sharma remains the only batter with three double-tons in ODIs.
But it seems that the BCCI is ready to move on from the ‘Hitman’, given that he will be 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup is played. With this in consideration, we take a look at the three players who can replace Rohit Sharma in India’s ODI team.
Here are the 3 players who could be Rohit Sharma’s replacement in India’s ODI team:
1. Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma has more or less cemented his place in India’s T20I team. He has scored 849 runs at a strike rate of 196.07 in 24 T20Is, including two centuries and five fifties, with the highest score of 135. He holds the record for the highest T20I score by an Indian batter.
Abhishek is yet to play ODIs or Tests for India but has a brilliant record in List A cricket, having scored 2036 runs with an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 99.02, including four centuries and eight fifties, with the best score of 170. He has the game to play aggressively at the top and take advantage of powerplay overs. He is one of the most promising batters to replace Rohit Sharma at the top.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal has played all three formats for India and has cemented himself in Test cricket, with over 2200 runs with six centuries to his name. He has played 23 T20Is with over 700 runs, including one century. Jaiswal made his ODI debut this year against England, scoring 15 runs. He has shown brilliant composure and aggression at the top in the longer white-ball format.
Another left-hander, Jaiswal, is also primed for the ODI format, as he was named in India’s ODI squad for the Australia tour. He has the perfect temperament for ODI cricket, as he can play with both caution and aggression and is adept against both spin and pace. He can play the long innings and can go all fifty overs easily, if needed. He is arguably the no. 1 contender to replace Rohit Sharma at the top for India in ODIs.
3. Ruturaj Gaikwad

Though Ruturaj Gaikwad is not in BCCI plans for now, the 28-year-old has the perfect temperament with the bat to replace Rohit Sharma as the opener in the Indian team. Ruturaj has played six ODIs and 23 T20Is for India so far. He has 115 runs in ODIs with one fifty and 633 runs in T20Is with one century and four fifties.
Gaikwad is a classical batter with perfect technique to conquer the best of pace bowlers. He has the knack of finding gaps in the powerplay overs and has an impressive game against the spinners as well. Though he is down in the list of possible replacements for Rohit, if India needs a right-handed batter who has the same flair and technique in a 50-over game, Gaikwad is one of the best options.
