3 Indians with 700+ runs in a Test series

There have been 36 occasions when batters have scored over 700 runs in a Test series. Donald Bradman holds the record for scoring the most runs in a Test series and went past the margin five times.  For India, Sunil Gavaskar has done this twice and both times against the West Indies.

Here are the 3 Indians with 700+ runs in a Test series:

1. Sunil Gavaskar (774 runs, 723 runs)

Gavaskar made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1971 when India went to the West Indies to play a five-match Test series. He missed the first Test of the series due to a nail infection and played the second match of the series in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. He hit the winning run for India in the fourth innings and helped the team register their first Test victory in the West Indies. In the third Test, Gavaskar scored his maiden century, but his best performance came during the fifth Test. He became only the second player in Test cricket’s history to score a double-century and a century in a Test match. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in the series in eight innings at an average of 154.80. He achieved a similar milestone in the home series against West Indies in 1978-79, when he amassed 732 runs in India’s 1-0 victory.

2. Shubman Gill (722 runs)

Shubman Gill became the second Indian player to score a double-century and a century in a Test match for India in the ongoing India tour of England. Gill, who is the captain of the side, has shattered a lot of records on this tour. He started the series in Leeds with a century and followed that with a record-breaking outing in Birmingham. His magic did not work at the Lord’s as he was dismissed for 16 and 6 runs in the two innings, respectively. However, he bounced back in the fourth Test with a century in the fourth innings. Gill is 52 runs away from equalling Gavakaar’s record.

3. Yashasvi Jaiswal (712 runs)

In 2024, England traveled to India to play a five-match Test series. Yashasvi Jaiswal came as a force to reckon with for the English bowlers. Jaiswal scored two centuries and three half-centuries in nine innings in the series. He converted these hundreds to double-hundred and became only the third Indian player to make two double-centuries in a series. Jaiswal finished with 712 runs in the series at an average of 89.
