The responsibilities and roles of the captain on the cricket field are many. A good captain can change the face of the whole team. The superpowers of world cricket are now moving forward under the leadership of different captains. Bangladesh cricket also has that custom. Currently ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, Test and T20 is led by Shakib Al Hasan. But there is always a question, who will lead the Tigers next when the era of Shakib-Tamim ends?
To answer that question, however, two names now come to the fore, Liton Kumar Das and Mehdi Hasan Miraj. Meanwhile, Liton is serving as Shakib’s assistant in Tests. On the other hand, Mirage has shown leadership skills at different times starting from age-based cricket.
On the future captaincy of the Tigers, Jalal Yunus, Head of Cricket Management, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said, “For now, Shakib and Tamim will lead. But we have a plan. Tamim will be in ODIs till the 2023 World Cup. Liton and Miraz are next. Nurul Hasan Sohan is also under consideration. It’s done. Hopefully, the youth can take over.”
White’s co-captain Lytton has proved himself in ODI cricket as well. He recently got a chance to lead in Tamim’s absence against India. Bajimat did it there. The team won the series by defeating India by 2-1. That success as a captain will vote in Lytton’s favor going forward. This opener is performing well with the bat.
On the other hand, there is no opportunity to question Mirage’s leadership qualities. This all-rounder is quite consistent in terms of performance. A few days ago, he scored a stunning century against India. Very effective with the ball. But another youngster on the board’s radar, Sohan’s individual performance has been disappointing. Due to which he can be questionable in leading.
In an interview, Lytton has already said that he is ready to continue with the captaincy for a full term. However, Miraj or Sohan have not yet opened their mouths about the captaincy. Shakib, Tamim will play cricket for a few more years. If any new cricketer comes up, he can also get leadership. On the other hand, Afif’s name has also been floating around as the next captain. After the era of Shakib-Tamim, who will take the leadership of Team Bangladesh, this is the question of crores of rupees.
