Although the English are ruling in the limited-overs, there has been not much achievement in the white jersey. Especially in recent times, the Englishmen have become quite chaotic. After losing in the Ashes, they became a failure in the West Indies series also. Brendon McCullum came to rescue the fading squad. He was appointed and became the head coach of the England Test team. He wants to bring back the old tradition of English with responsibility.
The English have won just one of their last 16 Tests. How bad times are going on in Test cricket can be gauged by looking at these statistics. Being unable to handle the pressure, Joe Root, the best batsman on the team, also left the captaincy. The England Cricket Board (ECB) has since reshuffled the Test squad.
Head coach Chris Silverwood has been sacked following the Ashes disaster. The ECB has returned to the two-coach policy for different formats. They have chosen former Kiwi captain Brendon McCullum as the guru of the Test team. The new coach also gave a message of hope to the English.
In this context, McCullum said, ”I think red-ball cricket is always at the top of the sport. Where the game stands, if you look at it, it’s going downhill now. In my opinion, England can change that downward trend. Because Test cricket has a tradition in England and I think there are fans here. ”
McCullum believes in man-management more than technical coaching. “I don’t coach technically,” he said. ”Techniques are definitely needed but here the matter of strategy and man-management works more. I try to give a good environment to the team and try to bring out the best in the players, ” he added.
Referring to new Test captain Ben Stokes as a strong leader, McCullum added: “I think we have a strong leader Stokes as captain. ”He (Stokes) is such a leader. So, my job is to make sure that we are consistent.”
