AUS vs ENG (2nd ODI) – Highlights

After winning the T20 World Cup 2022, England is getting crushed to play the ODI series against the Aussies. After a big loss to hosts Australia in the first match, the visitors also got defeated in the second ODI.

However, not only did Steven Smith shine in this match against England, but Australia also won by performing as a team. After the fifties from Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Mitchell Marsh, brilliant bowling by Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa helped Australia beat the reigning T20 champions by 72 runs. As a result, the Aussies clinched the three-match ODI series with one match remaining.

Batting first in Sydney on Saturday (November 19), the hosts collected 280 runs after losing 8 wickets at the end of the stipulated 50 overs. In response, the English innings stopped at 208 runs due to the bowling canon of Zampa and Starc in 38.5 overs.

This is Australia’s second ODI since Aaron Finch’s retirement. Pat Cummins, who started his ODI captaincy in the previous match, was rested in this match. Another pacer Josh Hazlewood has captained Australia in his place. England’s regular captain Jos Buttler was also rested. England was led by vice-captain Moeen Ali as a result of that.

Two openers David Warner (16) and Travis Head (19) who scored half-centuries in the previous ODI, could not extend the innings after coming down to bat and winning the toss. Within the first 10 overs, after the departure of the two openers, Smith and Labuschagne took control of the innings. These two made a partnership of 101 runs. However, both returned to the dressing room after being victimized by Adil Rashid.

With this, Smith became Rashid’s victim for the most time in ODI cricket, which is six in number. He played an innings of 94 runs playing 114 balls. His innings was studded with 5 fours and 1 six. Besides, Labuschagne scored 58 runs off 55 balls with the help of 4 fours and 1 six. Apart from Smith and Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh also got a half-century. He played an innings of 50 runs from 59 balls hitting equal 2 fours and sixes.

In the end, Australia got a fighting capital of 280 runs based on Ashton Agar’s cameo innings of 18 runs off 12 balls. Adil Rashid took the maximum number of 3 wickets for the English. Apart from this, Chris Woakes and David Willey took 2 wickets each and Moeen Ali took 1 wicket.

Chasing a challenging target of 281 runs, England fell under Mitchell Starc’s furious bowling spell at the beginning. Jason Roy, who has been in poor form recently returned without scoring any runs. Dawid Malan, who scored a century in the previous match, also had to return before opening the run book with a wonderful delivery off Starc. Then the visitors were under more pressure after losing Philip Salt (23) for the team’s 34 runs.

England had turned around a lot after handling the Starc storm. That work was done by James Vince and Sam Billings. The duo made a partnership of 122 runs for the fourth wicket. After handling the pressure, the English continued to walk on the road to victory. They still needed 125 runs from 133 balls to win. But Hazlewood sent Vince back to the pavilion by trapping him with a leg before. He scored 60 off 72 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

After that, when Zampa was doing well, England got knocked out of the match. England scored 156 runs for 3 wickets and lost 7 wickets for 169 runs. Zampa came and sent back Moeen (10), Billings, Sam Curran (0), and Liam Dawson (20) one by one. Billings scored 71 off 80 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes. None of the rest could settle at the crease. Starc came in and took the wickets of Woakes (7) and Willey (6). As a result, the English innings stopped at 208 runs.

For the Aussies, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa both scalped the highest number of four wickets each. Josh Hazlewood also got 2 wickets. Mitchell Starc was selected as the player of the match for his excellent bowling. These two teams will meet in the last match of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 22 (Tuesday).
