OTD | An innings victory in Sydney gave Australia a 4-0 win in the Ashes in 2018

In the five-match Test series, Australia clean-sweeps England, 4-0, in Ashes 2018. When it comes to the Ashes, Australia have always been a dominating team over the English players. The last game of the series happened in Sydney, where England captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat first.

It was a good opportunity for them to put some runs on the board and win the last game. Well, England’s batters did try their best as they scored 346 runs in the first innings. Captain Joe Root scored a brilliant 83 runs in 141 balls, including eight boundaries. Even Dawid Malan scored 62 runs in 180 balls, including six boundaries.

The lower middle-order batters contributed greatly to the scorecard. Pat Cummins claimed four wickets for Australia. However, Australian batters wreaked havoc on the English bowlers. With three batters scoring centuries, Australia’s score went up to 649 runs. Usman Khawaja scored 171 runs, Shaun Marsh scored 156 runs, and Mitchell Marsh scored 101 runs. England’s bowling was pathetic, as only Moeen Ali took two wickets.

In the second innings, England could manage to score just 180 runs, failing to get past the hosts’ score. Hence, they went on to lose the match by an innings and 123 runs. Pat Cummins claimed four wickets in the second innings, while Nathan Lyon took three wickets. Cummins was given the Player of the Match award for his brilliant bowling performance in the game. Steven Smith received the Player of the Series award. He scored 687 runs in the series.
