Cricket Recap: The 2019 Cricket World Cup victory by England

Cricket Recap: The 2019 Cricket World Cup victory by England

On July 14, 2019, a One Day International cricket match at Lord’s in London, England, declared the winner of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The tournament’s runners-up, New Zealand, and the host nation, England, participated. This was the sixth occasion that the Cricket World Cup Final had ever taken place at Lord’s.

The two teams were deadlocked at 241 runs at the end of the game, necessitating a Super Over to end the tie. Martin Guptill tried to equal the score with the 15 runs England scored in their over on the penultimate ball of New Zealand’s Super Over, but he was out by Jason Roy and Jos Buttler, therefore the Super Over was also tied. After striking 26 boundaries compared to New Zealand’s 17 on the boundary count-back system, England won the Cricket World Cup for the first time.

Ben Stokes

With just Jonny Bairstow scoring more than a half-century with 36, the New Zealand bowlers effectively contained England’s top order while defending a small score. In the 24th over, England was down to 86/4 after losing their top order. Jos Buttler and the fifth wicket put up a century together, though, and they recovered before Ben Stokes was caught. But England needed 46 more runs, so they had to bat more aggressively in the bottom order with five overs to go. With two wickets remaining, Stokes was able to farm the strike and, more importantly, score runs; England needed to win with 15 runs from the final over. After two dot balls, Stokes hit a six into the stands at deep mid-wicket to bring the total to 233/8.

Team New Zealand Background:

As co-hosts, the majority of the players from New Zealand’s 2015 Cricket World Cup Final team were kept on, and after Brendon McCullum retired, Kane Williamson assumed captaincy. After their match against India was postponed due to rain, they concluded the round robin round tied on 11 points with Pakistan (five wins, three losses, and one no result). Nevertheless, because their net run rate was higher than Pakistan’s, they did come in fourth.

In the semifinals, they faced India, the winners of the round-robin stage. The match was played at Old Trafford in Manchester on July 9. The match was abandoned due to rain, with New Zealand on 211/5 after 46.1 overs, Ross Taylor at 67 and Williamson at 67. Eventually, the next day’s play was shifted to the reserve day. With Taylor out for 74, they finished with a score of 239/8, and they bowled and fielded so well that they left India 18 runs short. Man of the Match Matt Henry took 3/37 off opening bowlers Rohit Sharma and K. Dinesh Karthik and L. Rahul each caught one, but it was Dinesh Karthik who produced an incredible six-figure catch for James Neesham. Trent Boult, another quick bowler, caught top scorer Ravindra Jadeja for 77 runs, while captain Virat Kohli was trapped leg before wicket for just one wicket. By that point, the contest seemed to be shifting in favor of India thanks to a seventh-wicket stand. After Martin Guptill straight-smashed World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni for 50 runs, India was ultimately left with only their tails.

Team England Background:

Conversely, England entered the event as the top-ranked ODI team, largely due to the efforts of director of cricket and former Ashes captain Andrew Strauss, who managed the team’s transition from white-ball cricket following their elimination in the 2015 group stage. A limited number of players who featured in the 2019 World Twenty20 Final—including Irish-born captain Eoin Morgan, Test captain Joe Root, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, and bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes—were kept from that team, despite the fact that many participated in the narrow defeat to the West Indies in the 2016 World Twenty20 Final. Morgan held the sole ICC global championship and was the only part of England’s 2010 global Twenty20 title squad before this final.

Their campaign was virtually ruined at Lord’s after they were defeated by Australia, the defending champions and fiercest opponents. In order to get to the semi-finals, they now needed to overcome both New Zealand and India. They won both games and finished third in the round robin round with six wins, three losses, and nine matches played. They took against Australia, who finished second in the group, in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on July 11. To go to the final, they easily defeated them by eight wickets.

Buttler’s 85 runs at bat against Australia’s top scorer and former captain Steve Smith, Woakes’s 9-run catch of David Warner, Jofra Archer’s golden duck of trapping captain Aaron Finch leg before wicket, and Jason Roy’s 85 off 65 as England finished their chase with 107 balls remaining were among the notable incidents.
