England (ENG) will be hosting India (IND) in the second One-Day International on Thursday, July 16, at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The visitors hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The Englishmen were bundled out for 258 after an opening stand of 61 between Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell. They were reeling at 107 for 6 before Joe Root and Liam Dawson put on a stand of 121 for the seventh wicket. Axar Patel picked up figures of 4 for 62 in 9.5 overs, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar also picked a couple of wickets each.

India made light work of the chase, with Shubman Gill (80 off 65) and Shreyas Iyer (35 off 53) putting on a stand of 101 runs for the second wicket before Iyer ran himself out while the Indian skipper retired hurt and left the field. Axar (57* off 52) and Washington Sundar (52* off 63) put on an unbeaten stand of 102 runs to take their team home with six wickets in hand.

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff: Pitch Report

The wicket at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff is a true surface which offers consistent bounce and carry throughout the game. Seamers get help with early lateral movement, and hit-the-deck bowlers can make use of the wicket in the middle and death overs. The ground is on the larger end, with longer square boundaries ranging up to over 75 metres. The straight boundaries are slightly shorter, making scoring runs down the ground easier.

Since 2025, England’s talisman Joe Root has been one of the most prolific batters in the format, scoring 1131 runs in 19 innings at an average of 70.68, scoring seven half-centuries and four centuries. He scored an unbeaten run-a-ball 76 in the first ODI to rescue the Three Lions from a precarious 107 for 6, stitching a 121-run stand along with Liam Dawson. The star batter will be hoping to have another decent outing next.

Probable Best Bowler: Jasprit Bumrah

The ever-reliable maverick Jasprit Bumrah made his much-awaited return to ODI cricket for the first time since the World Cup final in 2023. The ace pacer looked at his best on his return, and despite figures of 1 for 31 in nine overs, he looked threatening every time he came on to bowl. The sole wicket in the first ODI was also his 150th wicket in the format. He will be looking to add more wickets to his tally in the second ODI.
