MI vs PBKS (69th Match) – Highlights
On a warm evening in Jaipur, the 69th match of IPL 2025 brought the drama, fireworks, and a decisive statement from table-toppers Punjab Kings as they chased down 185 with casual flair, defeating Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets and with 9 balls to spare.
Mumbai Indians batted first, and showed more steadiness rather than fireworks. The innings began promisingly, as Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma added 45 runs for the first wicket with Rickelton scoring 27 runs off a clever angle from Marco Jansen. The innings came to life with Suryakumar Yadav’s customary stylishness, scoring 57 runs off 39 balls with six fours and two sixes. Suryakumar was the glue around which MI’s innings were built.
Hardik Pandya made a nice impact with a brisk 26 off 15 while Naman Dhir provided his side some late antics with a 12-ball 20, while Will Jacks’ short but lively cameo (17 off 8) also turned the scoreboard over. To be fair, MI exceeded 180, but their batting was never able to fully unleash against some fine bowling from Punjab as a collective unit. Arshdeep Singh was very good, returning with figures of 2 for 28, but there obviously weren’t just the two, with both Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak also picking up two wickets, though the latter gave away quite a few runs. A final total of 184/7 looked competitive, but looked below par for the exceptionally flat looking surface and short square boundaries.
Punjab’s chase was kicked off in electric fashion by young Priyansh Arya, who once again justified his spot at the top of the order. The 22-year-old dazzled with a stroke-filled 62 off 35, peppering the boundary ropes with nine fours and two sixes. He made a tough pitch look like a training net as he took on Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar with fearless intent.
While Prabhsimran Singh fell early to Jasprit Bumrah for just 13, it was the Inglis-Arya partnership that truly crushed MI’s hopes. Inglis brought his A-game to the table, mixing power with placement, and striking at 173.80. His knock, which included nine boundaries and three sixes, kept the required run rate firmly under control. The duo added a crucial 109 runs for the second wicket before Arya holed out in the deep to Santner.
Santner gave MI a glimmer of hope with Inglis’ wicket soon after, but Shreyas Iyer ensured the chase remained smooth, finishing unbeaten on 26 off just 16 balls. A short cameo from Nehal Wadhera was enough to cross the finish line in the 19th over, as Punjab Kings celebrated yet another convincing win that underlined their status.
Mumbai’s bowlers, apart from Bumrah (1/23), had little impact. Hardik Pandya and Ashwani Kumar leaked runs, while Santner’s 2-wicket haul came a tad too late. The fielding was sharp but couldn’t compensate for a modest bowling effort against PBKS’ high-quality batting lineup.
With this win, Punjab Kings not only consolidated their top spot but also sent a strong message to the playoff contenders. Mumbai Indians, now in the fourth spot, have plenty to think about heading into the business end of the tournament.
