ENG vs SA (11th Match) – Highlights
SA delivered a commanding performance against ENG in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, securing a seven-wicket victory with 125 balls to spare at Karachi’s National Stadium. Marco Jansen emerged as the standout performer, excelling with both the ball and in the field to earn the Player of the Match award. England, on the other hand, struggled to put up a competitive total, which the Proteas chased down with ease.
ENG, after being put in to bat, never quite got going as they struggled against South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack. Phil Salt started aggressively, hitting two boundaries in the very first over, but he fell to Marco Jansen for just 8. Jamie Smith’s stay at the crease was even shorter, as he was dismissed for a duck, giving Jansen his second wicket. Ben Duckett showed some intent with a quick 24 off 21 balls, but his dismissal left England in a precarious position at 37 for 3.
Joe Root attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 37 off 44 deliveries, but wickets kept tumbling around him. Harry Brook and Jos Buttler, England’s key middle-order batters, were unable to provide any real resistance. Brook fell to Keshav Maharaj for 19, and Buttler, the captain, managed just 21 from 43 balls before falling to Lungi Ngidi.
The lower order tried to push the score towards respectability, with Jofra Archer making a handy 25, but Wiaan Mulder’s three-wicket burst ensured England were bowled out for a modest 179 in 38.2 overs.
Marco Jansen was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3 for 39 in his seven overs. Mulder also picked up three wickets, conceding just 25 runs in 7.2 overs, while Maharaj chipped in with two scalps. South Africa’s disciplined effort was complemented by sharp fielding, with Jansen himself taking three catches.
Chasing a target of 180, SA had an early hiccup as Jofra Archer struck twice in quick succession. The explosive Ryan Rickelton played a fluent knock of 27 from 25 balls before Archer cleaned him up. Tristan Stubbs, coming in at No. 3, had a forgettable outing, getting bowled for a five-ball duck. At 47 for 2, England had a slight opening, but Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen ensured there were no further setbacks.
Van der Dussen played a classy knock, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 72 off 87 balls. His innings was laced with six fours and three sixes, and he timed his shots beautifully on a wicket that seemed to have eased up. Klaasen, at the other end, took the aggressive route, scoring a brisk 64 off 56 balls. His 11 boundaries put the England bowlers under immense pressure as the duo added 127 runs for the third wicket.
By the time Klaasen was dismissed, South Africa needed just six runs to win. David Miller came in and sealed the victory in style, smashing a six off only his second ball to finish the match in the 30th over. The chase was a testament to South Africa’s batting depth and their ability to dominate under pressure.
