In the 40th match of the Bangladesh Premier League 2025 at Mirpur, Chittagong Kings crushed Sylhet Strikers by 96 runs with a determined display. The Kings had come out to bat first where they set a target of 196 runs with the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Under pressure, Sylhet Strikers succumbed, scoring 100 runs in 15.2 overs.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, KINGS suffered a quick setback, as Parvez Hossain Emon was dismissed for 1 run in the first over through a brilliant delivery from Tanzim Hasan Sakib. The early blow was followed by another as Graham Clark went for just 1 run and out to the same bowler.
But Khawaja Nafay and skipper Mohammad Mithun put together a vital 94-run partnership to steady the innings. Of the two, it was Nafay who took the fight to the opposition, bludgeoning a quickfire 52 from just 30 balls, with five massive sixes. His innings carried the momentum Chittagong needed following the early couple of seats.
The second wicket pair of Mithun and Needham was more measured, but just as effective as Mithun hit 52 off 38 balls with two fours and three sixes. Shamim Hossain was the only real flash from the middle order, making a quick 38 off 23 at a strike rate of 165.21. Khaled Ahmed gave a late flourish in the end with a brisk 25 off 13 balls, guiding Chittagong past the 190-run mark. The Kings lost a few wickets in the back-end, however, their aggressive mindset saw them post a huge 196/8 in 20 overs.
SYS bowlers were unable to contain the Kings’ assault on their attack, though Tanzim Hasan Sakib (3/37) stood out among his peers taking wickets with the new ball and restricting the flow of runs and the Kings’ scoring rate. Samiullah Shinwari (2/36) and Ruyel Miah (2/42) picked up wickets, but were unable to stem the run flow. Chasing a big ask of 197, Sylhet Strikers required a good start, but disaster struck for their innings as they began.
Shoriful Islam dismissed Zawad Abrar for 2 runs in the second over. His fiery spell continued when he got rid of Rony Talukdar (17) and Jaker Ali (17) to leave Sylhet reeling at 49/4 within the first nine overs. Zakir Hasan demonstrated some urgency, striking 19 from 12, but he too succumbed to Khaled Ahmed, who proved destructive with his pace and accuracy.
The Strikers’ middle order couldn’t build partnerships, Aaron Jones (3), Nahidul Islam (14) and Ariful Haque (11) all falling cheaply. The bowlers of the Kings stuck to their plans perfectly, with the pick of the bunch being Shoriful Islam, who ran through the Yellows with a brilliant 4 for 5 — in his 3.2 overs. Khaled Ahmed, in tandem, also impressed, picking up 4/31 to skittle Sylhet’s batting line-up. Rahatul Ferdous (1/19) was also among the wickets as Sylhet offered no resistance.
Wickets continued to tumble for Sylhet as their innings wrapped up in just 15.2 overs, for a paltry 100 runs, giving Chittagong an emphatic 96-run victory. But it was all one-way traffic as the Kings showcased their all-round skills with bat and ball to re-establish their dominancy in the tournament.
