UPW-W vs GG-W (3rd Match) – Highlights
In this article, we will discuss the thrilling encounter between UPW Women and GG Women in the 3rd match of the Women’s Premier League 2025, held at Vadodara on February 16. Gujarat Giants Women secured a convincing victory by six wickets, successfully chasing the target of 144 with 12 balls to spare. The match showcased some excellent performances from both teams, with UP Warriorz Women putting up a competitive total despite early setbacks, and Gujarat Giants Women displaying a composed run chase.
The innings found some stability when Captain Deepti Sharma took charge with a fluent 39 off 27 balls, hitting six boundaries. She looked in control but was eventually caught off Priya Mishra’s bowling, bringing Gujarat Giants back into the game. The middle order struggled, with Tahlia McGrath (0 off 2) and Grace Harris (4 off 2) falling cheaply to Priya Mishra in quick succession, reducing UP Warriorz to 78/5 in 10.5 overs.
A late resurgence came from Alana King (19 off 14) and Saima Thakor (15 off 7), who played crucial cameos to push the total past 140. However, Sophie Ecclestone (2 off 7) and Shweta Sehrawat (16 off 18) couldn’t capitalize much, and UPW finished at 143/9 in 20 overs, setting Gujarat Giants a target of 144.
The bowling for GG was spearheaded by Priya Mishra, who took 3/25 in 4 overs, dismantling the middle order. Deandra Dottin (2/34) and Ashleigh Gardner (2/39) provided valuable breakthroughs, while Kashvee Gautam (1/15) maintained pressure with an economical spell.
Chasing 144, Gujarat Giants Women got off to a shaky start as Beth Mooney was dismissed for a golden duck by Grace Harris in the very first over. Things got worse when Dayalan Hemalatha (0 off 3) was bowled by Sophie Ecclestone, leaving the Giants struggling at 2/2 in 1.3 overs.
However, Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner steadied the innings, with Wolvaardt scoring 22 off 24 balls, including two boundaries and a six. But she too fell to Ecclestone, leaving Gujarat Giants at 57/3 in 8.3 overs.
The real turning point came when Captain Ashleigh Gardner led from the front with a commanding 52 off 32 balls, smashing five fours and three sixes at an impressive strike rate of 162.50. She dominated the bowling attack before being dismissed by Tahlia McGrath at a crucial moment when Gujarat was at 86/4 in 11.5 overs.
With Gujarat still needing 58 runs, Harleen Deol (34 off 30) and Deandra Dottin (33 off 18) ensured a clinical finish. Dottin, in particular, played an explosive knock, hitting three fours and two sixes at a stunning strike rate of 183.33, accelerating the chase. Gujarat Giants comfortably reached 144/4 in 18 overs, winning with 12 balls to spare.
