MI Cape Town put up a mammoth total of 201/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Pretoria Capitals could not chase the target down and were all out for 106 in 14 overs. MI Cape Town won the match by a commanding 95 runs with a display of batting strength and bowling prowess.
MI Cape Town chose to bat after winning the toss and made a blistering start with a brilliant partnership between Sediqullah Atal and Connor Esterhuizen. The pair batted with openers and took full advantage of the powerplay, scoring regularly in boundaries and keeping the strike moving. Atal was the aggressor, clobbering 74 off 46 balls, including four fours and six towering sixes. He kept the Capitals’ bowlers under pressure with his clean striking.
Esterhuizen was no less effective, smashing 69 from 43 deliveries that included six hits to the rope and three over it. The duo added a mammoth 133-run opening partnership to set the stage for a massive total. James Neesham laid the groundwork when he dismissed Atal in the 13th over, and Colin Ingram followed shortly afterwards, departing for 7 off 7 balls as MI Cape Town lost two wickets in the space of a handful of deliveries.
Despite the mini-collapse, Delano Potgieter provided a vital cameo of 26 off 15 balls, which made the innings during the death overs. Chris Benjamin proved ineffective though and was dismissed for a duck. A blistering 9 off 4 balls run from Dewald Brevis, which saw MICT finish with a mammoth total of 201/5 in their 20 overs.
James Neesham was the leading bowler for the Pretoria Capitals managing to take 3 wickets for 32 runs from four overs. The wickets came as a result of one each from Jason Behrendorff and Gideon Peters but the rest of the attack failed to stampede the rampage.
Chasing the challenging target of 202, PT endured a major blow as Will Jacks was sent back for a golden duck off the first ball, caught behind off Dane Piedt.
The early jolt unsettled the Capitals and they never really recovered. Steve Stolk (8 off 7) and Will Smeed (15 off 13) attempted a precarious rebuild but were unable to find rhythm, perishing in the first five overs. The middle order toppled under pressure completely, Kyle Verreynne (7 off 5) and Marques Ackerman (0 off 1) out in successive deliveries, leaving Pretoria Capitals staggered at 32/5 in the fifth over.
Keagan Lion-Cachet displayed some resistance with 17 off 11 deliveries, yet even he was unable to stick around. James Neesham was the only shining light for the Capitals, who, with 32 (24b, 6×4, 4×6) held his ground, but he found no partner on other end. After he fell in the 12th over, the collapse was already here. Pretoria Capitals bowled out for a mere 106 in 14 overs took a massive 95-run defeat.
Dane Piedt was the pick of the bowlers, bagging 3/28 as he delivered some early blows in the best bowling display of the innings. 3 wickets for 27 for Thomas Kaber (including the key wickets of Lion-Cachet and Matthew Boast) in three overs helped too. George Linde supported with a couple of wickets, while Dewald Brevis and Tristan Luus chipped in with one apiece. Pretoria Capitals did not get a sniff, thanks to MI Cape Town’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. You are browsing an archive of the website with data until October 2023.
