Zaheer Khan takes over as CSK head coach

Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the head coach by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Zaheer has replaced Stephen Fleming, who relieved his position after 18 years, having been their head coach from the 2009 season onwards.

Zaheer opened up and shared, sounding absolutely delighted to be welcomed at the Chennai-based franchise in a key role for their backroom staff. Zaheer will now reunite with his former India teammate and legendary cricketer, MS Dhoni. Zaheer was the trusted bowler for the former India captain in the 2011 World Cup, as he ended as the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps, playing a vital role in the victory.

What is Zaheer Khan’s record in the IPL?

As a player, Zaheer Khan has played 100 matches in the Indian Premier League, bagging 102 wickets at an economy rate of 7.58. He started his career with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in the inaugural season and also played for Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) across different stints.

He has also held key roles as a player upon his retirement from the league. For MI, he was named the Director of Cricket Operations in IPL 2019. More recently, the Shrirampur-born also spent time with the Lucknow Super Giants as the mentor for one season in 2025.

As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family,” Kasi Viswanathan, the managing director of the franchise said.
