The West Indies registered a comprehensive 90-run win in the first-ever Test match played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Wednesday, July 29.
The Caribbean side, under Roston Chase, scripted history earlier this month when they defeated Sri Lanka in a Test series for the first time in 23 years. Now, they continued their resurgence in the longest format against Pakistan.
In helpful conditions for fast bowlers, the West Indies batters showed grit and determination to score 311 in the first innings, with Shai Hope and Kavem Hodge amassing 92 and 84 runs, respectively. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for 282 despite Shan Masood’s gutsy century and Imam-ul-Haq’s fighting half-century.
Justin Greaves took his first five-for in international cricket in Pakistan’s first innings. He bowled five consecutive wicket maidens to break the back of Pakistan’s batting.
Having taken a first-innings lead of 29 runs, the West Indies could only muster 181 in their second innings. The odd ball started to keep low and the seam movement caused all sorts of problems for the batters. Mohammad Abbas bagged a five-wicket haul, while Shamar Joseph top-scored with a 27-ball 38.
Chasing a 211-run target in the final innings, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam carried his bat to score an unbeaten 58. However, only two batters apart from him got to double figures as Pakistan were bowled out for 120. Jayden Seales was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 5/20.
