The West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in a Test series for the first time in 23 years. After winning the first Test comprehensively by an innings and 217 runs last month, the Caribbean side drew the second Test on Wednesday, July 8, to bag the series 1-0.

Sri Lanka opted to bat first after winning the toss in the second Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The tourists posted a massive 549/9 in the first innings on the back of Lahiru Udara’s maiden Test century. The right-handed batter slammed 188 off 248 balls, hitting 21 fours and five sixes.

Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis, and Sonal Dinusha scored 84, 69, and 92, respectively, paving the way for Sri Lanka to post a huge first-innings total.

In reply, the West Indies showed a lot of grit and determination score 499 in 165.5 overs. Justin Greaves and Shai Hope scored important centuries and forged a record-breaking 242-run partnership for the fifth wicket. John Campbell also chipped in with a solid half-century.

Sri Lanka tried to bat with intent in their second innings, looking to capitalise on the 50-run lead they earned. The visitors declared at 251/9 in 49 overs to set the West Indies a target of 302. The West Indies were in no rush to go for the target as they knew that a draw would be enough for them to win the series. Campbell and Brandon King scored unbeaten half-centuries as the West Indies finished on 109 in 40 overs before the two teams decided to shake hands.
