South Africa won the pulsating first Test against India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata by 30 runs on Sunday, November 16, to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
On a rank turner, Temba Bavuma scored a gritty 55 not out off 136 balls on Day 3 and added useful partnerships with the lower-order batters. His knock helped South Africa take their lead beyond the 100-run mark.
Eventually, the Proteas were bowled out for 153 in 54 overs. Ravindra Jadeja starred with the ball, picking up a four-for, while the other bowlers also chipped in.
The Asian giants needed just 124 runs in the fourth innings to secure victory. However, Marco Jansen dismissed the Indian openers inside the first three overs and despite Washington Sundar’s brief partnerships with Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja, South African bowlers kept the pressure on by bowling tightly.
Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers, as he spun a web around the Indian batters, much like he did in the first innings. Axar Patel tried to take the attack to Keshav Maharaj when he was left with the tail. However, after hitting a flurry of boundaries, he holed out to Bavuma, who took a brilliant catch running backwards.
Mohammed Siraj was the last batter to be dismissed as Keshav Maharaj sent him packing. With Shubman Gill being unable to bat due to an injury, India were dismissed for 93 in 35 overs.
