Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur explained how the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and her time with the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) team have played a key role in shaping her mindset as a leader. The 36-year-old etched her name into the history books last year as she became the first Indian captain to win the Women’s ODI World Cup.

Harmanpreet has been involved in the WPL since its inception in 2023. She has already led the Mumbai Indians to two WPL titles, one in 2023 and the other in 2025.

“The WPL has given us a different kind of exposure. When you play in an environment where every game matters and every team is competitive, it automatically builds a winning mindset. Mumbai Indians, in particular, have always focused on excellence, and that rubs off on you as a player and as a leader,” Harmanpreet said during a press conference.

Harmanpreet asserted that the city of Mumbai holds a special place in her heart and explained how it has had a positive impact on her career.

“Mumbai feels special to me. The energy of the city and the support you get here makes a big difference. It’s a place where I’ve always felt comfortable, and that helps you express yourself freely on the field,” Harmanpreet said.

What stands out for me is the family atmosphere: Harmanpreet on playing for MI

Harmanpreet praised the atmosphere in the MI camp, saying that the support from the management and coaching staff helps players express themselves.

“What stands out for me is the family atmosphere. When players feel supported by the management and coaching staff, they play without fear. That trust and backing is crucial, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the WPL,” the Punjab-born stated.

Defending champions Mumbai will begin their WPL 2026 campaign on Friday, January 9, as they take on Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
