WPL Final: Delhi Metro extends operational timings to facilitate easy public commute

The second edition of the Women Premier League (WPL) has reached its culmination point, as the winner will be decided by a mouthwatering grand finale between the Delhi Capitals Women and the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Sunday, March 17. While Delhi reached the final on the basis of occupying the first spot in the points table, the Smriti Mandhana-led side won the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians Women to seal their spot in the all-important final.

Meanwhile, the WPL setup has certainly set the stage ablaze with fans turning out to support women’s cricket in large numbers. In fact, the initial half of the tournament was hosted in Bengaluru, which had gained extremely positive response from the public, considering the fact that it was the first-ever women’s sporting event organized on a big scale. Most of the games were almost houseful, and tickets remained sold-out days prior to the scheduled fixtures.

The organizers and franchises have taken  note of the same, and partnered with local public transport operators for easy to-and-fro commute of spectators, who are expected to turn out in large numbers for the highly-anticipated encounter in Delhi. As a result, DMRCL, the chief operator of Delhi Metro, has joined hands with the Delhi Capitals to extend usual operational timings for their daily transport service in the city.

Notably, the metro is the lifeline of the capital city and is used by millions daily to enable their daily mobility from one place to another. The decision is, thus, a much-needed one, as extra rush is expected at metro stations in the stadium’s surroundings. The Delhi-based franchise took to their social media to share the information with the public, which allows hassle-free travel for the fans, the 12th man of the game.

“Hassle-free Metro rides for fans, after a historic #TATAWPLFinal. Delighted to work with @OfficialDMRC in making this happen as fans will now be able to conveniently take the Metro as their ride home, after the game, with the final metro leaving as late as 12:15 am,” captioned DC.

Subsequently, more than 25,000 travelled to and from the stadium daily for fixtures at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and thus, using public transport was the go-to mode of commute in order to reach the venue on time. As a result, BMRCL operated its metro services in the city till 1:30 am, which allowed for fans to reach their preferred destinations even if the games ended late.

Speaking of the game, the Meg Lanning-led side will be eyeing to clinch their maiden championship, after missing out in a closely-fought clash in the final of the previous edition. Meanwhile, RCB’s women will also be hoping to make it count in their first-ever final in the league, which their men’s team have failed to do in their 17-year-long history of the Indian Premier League.
