England’s preparations for the one-off Women’s Ashes Test against Australia have suffered a major setback with the unavailability of fast bowler Kate Cross. The 32-year-old seamer has been ruled out of the historic day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) due to a back injury, which had also sidelined her from the ODI series earlier in the tour.

The only Test of the Women’s Ashes 2025 is set to begin on January 30, with England looking for a comeback after losing both the T20I and ODI series. England captain Heather Knight confirmed the news, expressing disappointment on losing such an experienced player for the crucial game. Knight praised Cross for her efforts to recover quickly.

“Kate Cross is unfortunately not going to be playing. She’s been amazing. She’s worked so diligently to try and get over her (back) injury. Worked really hard, but she hasn’t quite been able to get back to her pace and performance level. Really gutted for her, because she’s a key member for us, and it’s been really great to have her back around the group actually the last couple of days, she’s a huge member of the team and a leader in this group,” Knight was quoted as saying by the ICC.

Sophia Dunkley to be included in playing XI, confirms Knight

Cross has played eight matches and picked up 25 wickets at an average of 30.72. In her absence, young pacer Ryana MacDonald-Gay and an additional spinner are being considered as potential replacements. Knight confirmed that Sophia Dunkley will be included in the playing XI.

Meanwhile, Australia received great news with the return of captain Alyssa Healy and all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner. Healy, who missed the T20Is due to a foot injury, has recovered in time for the longest format of the game and will lead the side.

Gardner, too, has overcome a minor calf issue and is fit for selection. Healy, while confirming her availability, stated that the Australian team management is yet to finalize their playing XI.

The hosts have already retained the Ashes with dominating performances across the white-ball formats, winning both the T20I and ODI series. The hosts will now look to complete a series sweep with a victory in the lone Test, while the visitors are looking to end the tour on a high note.
