WI vs PAK 2026: Shan Masood ruled out of 2nd Test, jeopardising his tour to England

Pakistan batter Shan Masood has sustained a finger injury, ruling him out for the second Test against the West Indies, which commences on Sunday, August 2, at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago. The hosts are currently 1-0 up in the series after winning the first Test by 90 runs.

Despite the Men in Green’s defeat, Masood had a great outing in the first Test, scoring 109 runs in the first innings, the only individual century of the game. However, during his outstanding knock, the left-handed batter was struck on his finger by Jayden Seales. He did not take the field on the fourth morning, and when his team was in trouble in the second innings, he came out to bat at number eight, where he scored just three runs. 

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), however, confirmed that, following scans and other assessments, Masood will be deemed unavailable for selection for the second Test while the travelling medical staff treat him on his injured finger. 

“Pakistan Test batter Shan Masood has been ruled out of the second Test against the West Indies after sustaining an injury to the index finger of his left hand during the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. Following a scan and clinical assessment, Shan is currently undergoing treatment from the Pakistan team medical panel,” the official PCB statement read. 

The unfortunate timing of the injury also jeopardises Masood’s selection for the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. The former Pakistan captain knows the ground really well, having represented Yorkshire for two seasons in the country’s domestic circuit. He will, however, travel with the rest of the squad instead of returning home.

“His availability for the first Test against England starting 19 August at Leeds will depend on his recovery and clinical progress. In the meanwhile, he will remain with the team,” the statement continued. 

Following Pakistan’s short tour to the Caribbean, they are set to travel to England for a three-match series for the first time in nearly six years.
