Gautam Gambhir will not be in the dugout for India at the 2026 Asian Games. VVS Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, has been appointed to take charge of the side for the T20I tournament. Shreyas Iyer will captain the team, with Tilak Varma named as his deputy.

India are defending champions at the Asian Games, having claimed gold under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership at the 2023 edition. A full-strength squad has been assembled for the 2026 tournament as the team targets back-to-back titles.

Laxman is no stranger to this role. He stepped in as India’s interim head coach during the Zimbabwe tour in July 2026, and his appointment for the Asian Games follows the same pattern whenever Gambhir is committed to a concurrent assignment with the senior side.

Why is Gambhir not available for the Asian Games?

A direct scheduling conflict is the reason behind Gambhir’s absence. Gambhir is the all-format head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, and with India set to play a three-match ODI series against the West Indies beginning September 27, he will oversee the team’s preparations and management throughout that window.

The overlap is significant. India’s opening Asian Games fixture falls on September 28, the very day the ODI series gets under way. The second and third ODIs are lined up in Guwahati and Mullanpur on September 30 and October 3, respectively, meaning Gambhir’s attention remains with the senior white-ball group for the entire duration of India’s Asian Games campaign.

With both assignments running simultaneously, the BCCI has turned to Laxman as the trusted deputy to lead the Asian Games contingent.

What does India’s Asian Games schedule look like?

Cricket at the 2026 Asian Games gets underway on September 24, though India enters the competition at the quarterfinal stage on September 28. Their second quarterfinal tie is at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, with the first ball scheduled for 10:30 AM IST.

A win there would set up a semifinal on October 1. The gold medal contest is pencilled in for October 3, which coincidentally falls on the same date as the third ODI in Mullanpur. All matches in the competition are played in the T20I format, adding further context to why a specialist squad featuring the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Arshdeep Singh has been assembled for the event.
