Tensions between India and Pakistan spilled over into the cricketing world, following the recent Pahalgam attack, casting a shadow on the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025. The much-anticipated match between India Champions and Pakistan Champions was cancelled last week after Indian players withdrew in protest.
Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suspended India’s participation in the tournament, pushing the Asia Cup 2025 to the brink of cancellation. Reports suggested that the board was awaiting clearance from the Indian government before confirming its decision, while the ACC explored alternative venues in a bid to keep the tournament on track.
Amid the controversy, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) surprised everyone by releasing the official schedule for the Asia Cup on Saturday, July 26. The most striking detail was the scheduling of a high-stakes India and Pakistan clash on September 14, set to be played in the UAE, the designated host nation of the tournament. The announcement sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling on the BCCI to boycott the Asia Cup.
Despite the initial uncertainty, the Asia Cup 2025 is now set to proceed as planned. The tournament will be played in the T20 format, keeping in mind the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in 2026. For the first time in its history, the Asia Cup will feature eight teams.
The eight participating teams have been divided into two groups. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, while Group B features Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Four stage, where all qualifying teams will play against each other. The top two teams from the Super Four will then move on to the final.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 9 and conclude with the final on September 28. The opening match will be played between Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
