Former English cricketer Michael Atherton commended the quality of cricket played during the 2025 edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The five-match series finished evenly poised at 2-2 after India secured a thrilling six-run win in the final Test. Atherton relished the charged atmosphere the series presented.

“What a series it’s been! It’s been fiery at times, with tension and needle, but these two teams have given us the most magnificent series,” shared Atherton while speaking to Sky Sports.

Much like his colleague, former English skipper Nasser Hussain could not help but admire the enthralling nature of the series.

“It was an incredible series. It wasn’t just today. It wasn’t four boring games and then a thrilling climax – it was gripping all the way through. We’ll wake up tomorrow and sigh that there’s no more England vs India in this Test series. This has been an incredible story: different conditions, different pitches, brilliant scenes – not just here, but across the last six weeks,” commented Hussain.

Hussain further wondered why a compelling format such as Test cricket was not given the attention it deserves. He also made a point for cricketing powerhouses such as England, India, and Australia to keep Test cricket in contention.

“Why do people knock this format? It’s just so wonderful. But I’m afraid other countries don’t have the luxuries that England, India, and Australia enjoy. The crowds throughout the series – pretty much sold out every day. Even today, there was a sell-out crowd for just 55 minutes of play,” he added.

“Not every country has that privilege. England, India, and Australia must keep an eye on the future of Test match cricket. If we let this go, we’re doing the game a disservice. We need to keep pushing it forward and look after those who aren’t as fortunate,” stated Hussain.

India retained the trophy with the captivating win at The Oval. Shubman Gill (754 runs in 10 innings) and Mohammed Siraj (23 wickets in nine innings) emerged as the leading run-getter and leading wicket-taker, respectively.
