‘Why did you come?’ – R Ashwin reveals first conversation with mother upon arrival in Chennai

Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin did not have much time to celebrate taking 500 Test wickets for the Indian team, as the 37-year-old had to leave the Rajkot Test against England midway and travel to Chennai to see her mother who was in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to be with his ailing mother.

Leaving the clash midway, Ashwin recently came forward to reveal the conversation that he had with his mother upon his arrival in Chennai. The veteran revealed that his mother asked him why he came to see her and that he should be with the team facing England.

“When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, ‘Why did you come?’ The next time she was conscious, she said, “I think you should go back because the Test match is happening,” the 37-year-old told ESPNcricinfo.

Furthermore, Ashwin talked of how his parents and family left no stone unturned in helping him realise his dream of becoming a cricketer. The Chennai-born cricketer how big of a roller coaster ride it has been for his parents.

“The entire family is built on cricket and to facilitate my career. It hasn’t been easy. It has been very hard on them. It’s been a big roller-coaster for them – going through the emotions and ups and downs that I myself do,” Ashwin said.

“I am in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me. They have eliminated anything that comes in the way of my cricket. That has been the sole purpose of their lives ever since I can remember,” he added.
