Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Prashant Veer created history on Tuesday, December 16, by becoming the most expensive uncapped player in Indian Premier League (IPL) auction history. Entering the IPL 2026 auction at a base price of ₹30 lakh, the 20-year-old was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a staggering ₹14.20 crore.
CSK had to fend off early competition from Rajasthan Royals (RR) and a late surge from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as Veer’s price escalated rapidly during the bidding process. The deal officially eclipsed all previous records for uncapped players in IPL auctions.
A left-arm spinner who also bats in the middle order, Veer is set to make his IPL debut. In 12 T20 matches, he has scored 112 runs at a strike rate of 167.16 and taken 12 wickets in nine innings at an impressive economy rate of 6.45. Veer first caught the spotlight in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, representing Noida Super Kings, and is regarded as a long-term prospect to eventually step into the role occupied by Ravindra Jadeja at Chennai Super Kings.
Veer’s breakthrough performance
Prashant Veer enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 season, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young all-rounders in Indian domestic cricket. He was named the Emerging Player of the Season in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League 2025 after scoring 320 runs in 10 innings at an impressive average of 64 and a strike rate of 155.34, which included three half-centuries. With the ball, the left-arm spinner claimed eight wickets at an average of 21.75 and an economy rate of 6.69, underlining his all-round value.
Veer’s rise continued in the Men’s U23 State A Trophy, where he was adjudged Player of the Tournament despite Uttar Pradesh finishing runners-up to Tamil Nadu. He amassed 376 runs in seven matches at a staggering average of 94, registering four fifties, and complemented his batting with 18 wickets at an average of 18.77 and an economy rate of 5.36.
Earlier, Veer had expressed his desire to play for Chennai Super Kings under MS Dhoni. That dream has now been realised, with CSK securing him for a whopping price at the IPL auction.
