Who is Dane Piedt? Everything you need to know about the forgotten South African spinner

Dane Leeroy Piedt is a name that has resurfaced in cricket headlines after a good amount of gap. Having been on and off in South African cricket, Piedt has had a journey that led him to unexpected paths, ultimately bringing him back to the limelight.

Hailing from South Africa, Piedt’s journey in cricket started with the Western Province cricket team, where he made his mark as an off-spinner and a reliable lower-order batter. His capabilities earned him a spot with the Cape Cobras in 2011, starting the foundation for his professional career.

Piedt’s career witnessed both highs and lows, marked by significant achievements and unforeseen challenges. Despite his talent, he faced uncertainties, notably when the T20 Global League was postponed, disrupting his career path. Nevertheless, he had good performances in domestic competitions such as the Four-Day Franchise Series Cricketer of the Season in 2019.

Piedt picked his career-best test figures

He made his Test debut for the Proteas in 2014 against Zimbabwe and had played his last Test match in 2019 against India in Ranchi before the Hamilton Test. Ever since he was not given a chance to represent the South African national side.

In 2020, Piedt moved to the United States to pursue eligibility for the national cricket team.

Amid his endeavours in the United States, Piedt received an unexpected call that would help him revamp his cricketing career. A plea from Shukri Conrad brought Piedt back into the setup, asking him to represent South Africa against New Zealand in 2024.

Piedt accepted the call, despite initial disbelief. The 33-year-old cricketer’s return to international cricket was nothing short of spectacular. In the Hamilton Test against New Zealand, he showcased his skills with a career-best performance, claiming five wickets and steering South Africa to a lead.

While the first Test was won at Mount Maunganui by the Kiwis and took a lead in the series, the visitors made a roaring comeback in the second Test with a lead of 31 runs after the end of Day 2. Piedt was not playing the first Test and was drafted straight into the XI for the second.
