The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is currently underway, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and will run from February 7 to March 8. South Africa will begin their campaign on February 9 against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Proteas have been placed in Group D alongside Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. They enter the tournament with confidence after finishing as runners-up in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where they suffered a narrow defeat to India in the final hosted across the West Indies and the United States.

What is South Africa’s record at the Narendra Modi Stadium in T20Is?

South Africa have played just one T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. That match came during their recent tour of India, when they featured in the fifth T20I of the series. The Proteas suffered a 30-run defeat in that encounter, which also resulted in them losing the series to the Men in Blue.

Batting first, India posted an imposing total of 231/5 in their 20 overs. Hardik Pandya played a blistering knock, scoring 63 off just 25 balls, which included five fours and five sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 252. Tilak Varma provided strong support with a fluent 73 off 42 deliveries, striking 10 fours and one six at a strike rate of 173.80. For South Africa, Corbin Bosch was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 2/44.

In response, South Africa put up a valiant effort but fell short of the target. Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock led the chase with an aggressive 65 off 35 balls, which featured nine fours and three sixes. However, a lack of substantial contributions from the rest of the batting lineup proved costly, and the Proteas eventually finished on 201/8. For India, Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball, claiming 4/53, while Jasprit Bumrah picked up 2/17. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya took one wicket each.

With valuable match experience at the venue and focused preparations ahead of their opening fixture against Canada, South Africa will be aiming to turn their fortunes around and start their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on a positive note.
