India ended their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 following a hard-fought loss to Australia in their last group-stage fixture at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday, June 28. Following the defeat, there have been questions whether Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to be India Women’s captain in the future as well. Head coach Amol Muzumdar has, however, backed her to remain in charge of the side.
Muzumdur said that the decision to keep Harmanpreet as the captain of the side will depend solely on the selection committee. The former Mumbai cricketer added his perspective, saying that there is no reason why the current skipper should not continue her role with the Women in Blue. He did not elaborate a lot on the query but expressed a lot through a single statement.
“It’s up to the selectors to decide the captain. My short and sweet answer would be yes,” Muzumdar said in the post-match press conference as quoted by India Today.
Furthermore, Muzumdar also stressed the factors that led to an early exit for the Indian team from the ongoing global event. As Harmanpreet & Co. failed to make it to the semi-finals, Muzumdar highlighted that a better performance while bowling and fielding could help them produce better outcomes, while also following an attacking mindset with the bat.
“If I have to pinpoint the key areas from the entire tournament, I think we really need to work on our bowling and fielding. We also need to be a little more aggressive with the bat. Maybe we could have had an extra 15-20 runs as a cushion,” Muzumdar said.
Having said that, if you look at our bowling attack, it’s still very inexperienced at the international level. I’ve said this before as well, give us 18 months and this bowling attack will be a very different one,” he concluded.
With their T20 World Cup dreams over, India Women will be looking forward to their next challenge against England Women for a solitary Test match at Lord’s starting Friday, July 10. Following this, the Indian side will be hosting Zimbabwe for a white-ball series at home, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs in a tour that is scheduled to be played in October.
