In a recent turn development, Western Australia is set to take the lead as the host for the first Test in the upcoming blockbuster five-Test series against India. Despite recent attendance challenges, Perth will be the venue for this highly anticipated match, signalling a significant win for the state.

While Western Australia celebrate, Queensland and South Australia find themselves on the losing end, as Cricket Australia manoeuvres the schedule around the Big Bash, prioritizing its alignment with Australian players’ availability during the final three weeks of January.

South Australia’s hope for a day-night Test before Christmas, backed strongly by the government and cricket association, has been dashed. Instead, Adelaide will host the second Test, with Brisbane following suit for the third. Melbourne and Sydney will retain their traditional slots for the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests, respectively.

Cricket Australia is yet to formally release the schedule, with details still being finalized for the Big Bash and Women’s Big Bash. A Cricket Australia spokesman emphasised, “The schedule is yet to be finalized,” as quoted by watoday.com.au, hinting at more surprises to come.

The decision to commence the series in Perth is not surprising, given Australia’s strong history at Perth Stadium. In recent years, Test cricket attendance at the stadium has been low, prompting efforts to enhance the popularity of Test cricket in Perth. One strategy involves scheduling Test matches during prime-time broadcast slots, strategically leading into the Big Bash.

With powerhouse teams like India and England set to tour Australia in the next two years, it is anticipated that Perth’s Test attendance will rise significantly. Hosting the series opener and a day-night Test sets the stage for a successful lead-in to the Big Bash, ensuring continuous cricket action from mid-December to late January.

As fans eagerly await the official schedule announcement, players such as David Warner are navigating contract negotiations and balancing commentary commitments. The looming IPL also plays a role in shaping Australia’s squad for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup.

Excitement is mounting for the upcoming cricket season, with all eyes on Western Australia as it prepares to kick off the Test series in style, promising thrilling matches and potentially record-breaking attendance.
