Explosive all-rounder Andre Russell is back in the scheme of things as the 35-year-old has been recalled after a two-year hiatus for the T20I series against England. He last featured in the T20 World Cup 2021 following which, the cricketer is said to have had an issue with the board and hence, was out of the squad. However, with the T20 World Cup 2024 set to begin in less than six months, he has been called up to bolster their attack.

Additionally, Matthew Forde, who was adjudged Player of the Match in the final ODI of the series against England has made room for himself in the 15-member squad. Sherfane Rutherford, who had a terrific time with the bat in the ODI series has been called up as well. On the other hand, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder, who missed a significant number of international games in the recent past have been named in the squad.

Notably, the return of these players gives an early indication of West Indies’ plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup. They failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2022 and also in the ODI World Cup 2023 and thus, want to create a significant impact in the home World Cup, as they are set to co-host alongside the USA.

“This will be the final home T20I series for the West Indies in 2023, as they prepare to be one of the two host teams for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June 2024. We have selected a squad that we think gives us the best chance of success in that tournament. We will continue to assess in the lead up to the competition,” Desmond Haynes, CWI’s lead selector said after the squad announcement.

Meanwhile, ODI skipper Shai Hope has been named the vice-captain of the team and the selection panel will have the opportunity for squad adjustments for the final two matches of the series.

West Indies squad – Rovman Powell (c), Shai Hope (vc), Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd
