Former Australian opener and current Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach Justin Langer has expressed interest in becoming the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The BCCI recently announced they are accepting applications for the role, with Rahul Dravid’s tenure set to end after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in June.

The BCCI’s decision to open up the head coach position has caught the attention of many. Dravid, who took over the responsibilities in 2021, has had mixed results in white-ball cricket. As Dravid’s contract nears its end, the BCCI is leaving no stone unturned in finding the best candidate for one of cricket’s most high-profile jobs.

It would be fascinating: Justin Langer

When asked about the vacant India coaching role, the 53-year-old Langer admitted he is curious and finds the prospect fascinating.

“Well, I am curious, I’ve never thought about it. I have deep respect for any international coach because I understand the pressure, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role. From what I’ve seen with the amount of talent I’ve seen in this country, it would be fascinating,” Langer told TOI.

Langer has had an impressive coaching tenure with the Australian men’s team, having guided them for nearly four years from 2018-2022. He oversaw their revival after the Sandpaper scandal and led them to their first T20 World Cup title in 2021. His man-management skills and ability to forge a winning culture drew praise.

The former opener’s experience of handling the pressures of coaching an IPL franchise like LSG could also hold him in good advantage. Though LSG’s results have been mixed, Langer has gained valuable insights into the expectations and challenges of the high-stakes Indian cricketing environment.

If the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee opts for a foreign coach this time around, Langer could be an option to seriously consider. With over 100 Tests under his belt as an opener, he understands the demands of international cricket.
