‘We should celebrate his life, not…’ – Kapil Dev on Rohit Sharma’s retirement speculation

Former India captain Kapil Dev has shared his thoughts on the growing speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, saying that whenever the Indian skipper decides to retire, it should be a moment of celebration rather than sadness.

Rumours about Rohit’s retirement have intensified during India’s ongoing ODI series against England, with reports suggesting that the third ODI at Lord’s could potentially be his final appearance in the format. However, the BCCI has already dismissed such claims.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain urged fans to celebrate Rohit’s remarkable contribution to Indian cricket whenever he decides to call time on his career.

“No, let’s say happy. Why sad? He has given us so much happiness over the years. Everybody has to go. Sunil Gavaskar gone, Rahul gone, Anil Kumble gone, Sachin gone. Everybody has to go,” Kapil was quoted as saying by Rediff.

Kapil said every cricketer’s journey eventually comes to an end, but the focus should remain on the memories and joy they have given to fans over the years.

“So when he goes, we should celebrate his life. What a happiness, how much entertainment he has given to the country, not only to the country, but also around the world. We should be happy, why sad?” he said.

The legendary all-rounder also wished Rohit the perfect farewell whenever he decides to retire from ODI cricket.

“Yes, he has to go one day. I hope if he’s going, he should get a hundred and go,” he added.

The retirement debate has gathered pace following Rohit’s modest returns in the ongoing ODI series against England. The experienced opener has registered scores of 11 and 26 in the first two matches, while India and England head into the series decider at Lord’s with the contest level at 1-1.

Rohit, who made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007, has already retired from both T20Is and Test cricket. In eight ODI appearances this year, the 39-year-old has scored 241 runs at an average of 30.12, with a highest score of 79.
