‘We know how valuable he is’ – Pat Cummins defends Nathan Lyon’s role amid Scott Boland selection debate

Nathan Lyon has been retained in Australia’s squad for the second Test against Bangladesh at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, with Matthew Renshaw the sole change from the team defeated by nine wickets in Darwin. The decision to keep the veteran spinner came after genuine debate among selectors about whether to field an all-seam attack instead, with mild winter conditions in central Queensland prompting discussions about Scott Boland potentially coming in at Lyon’s expense.

Lyon took 1 for 125 in the series-opener at Marrara Oval in Darwin, a performance on a pitch that offered bounce and spin to the quicker bowlers. Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain, has publicly backed Lyon’s inclusion and addressed the selection conversation directly. The off-spinner took 3/25 in the second Test.

“There was a bit of spin and bounce in this wicket and the quicks were getting the job done, so we probably saw less overs from Nathan this Test match on probably a wicket that suited him with bounce and spin,” Cummins said as quoted by The West Australian.

Why the selection debate arose

Cummins acknowledged that conditions and the quality of available fast bowlers both factored into the selection discussion. The captain explained that Boland’s class as a bowler made the decision between him and Lyon a genuine conversation point, though the team remained confident in the veteran spinner’s fitness and value to the attack.

“I would say conditions is one (factor) and also Scotty Boland’s class is the other one. That’s why it becomes a conversation. It does seem like a lot of Test matches are accelerated. But we know how valuable Nath is and we think he is fit enough to play as many as he needs to,” Cummins said.

“Before the presser the other day I hadn’t really had a good look. We did five minutes of looking and thought we probably did need him out there. With Scotty Boland’s class you always assess every option” he added.

Carey highlights Lyon’s Test record and squad depth

Alex Carey, Australia’s wicketkeeper, reinforced the case for Lyon’s continued selection by highlighting his long Test record and the flexibility it provides the selectors across different surfaces. Carey noted that Lyon’s experience and proven ability made him a cornerstone of Australia’s bowling plans, even as the team explored various combinations with pace bowlers and part-time spinners.

“Nathan is a high-class bowler and has been for a number of years, but what we have seen is that any bowling attack we go in with we normally do a pretty good job. The make-up has been changed around a bit in recent times. We’ve seen four quicks at times, we’ve got allrounders and part-time spin and Nathan, who has taken (571) Test wickets,” Carey said.

“You could easily say Nathan could play every Test match which lines up well. I think for the selectors to be really flexible on different surfaces … there are great options for us,” he added.

The selection debate reflects the ongoing competition for the third pace spot in Australia’s Test XI. Josh Hazlewood kept Boland out of the opening match against Bangladesh in Darwin, with the decision between Boland and Hazlewood described as a line ball call for the third seaming position behind Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. Lyon’s retention for Mackay signalled that the selectors viewed the spinner as essential to their bowling plans despite the availability of quality fast-bowling alternatives.
