Wayne Madsen, Derbyshire’s captain, will enter a 19th season at the club after agreeing a red ball-only deal covering the 2027 campaign. Derbyshire County Cricket Club confirmed the arrangement on October 15, 2026.
Madsen first arrived at Derbyshire in 2009 and has since accumulated more than 24,000 all-format runs for the county, including 52 centuries. The new contract is restricted to red ball cricket, so he will play no part in Derbyshire’s white-ball programme in 2027.
In July 2026, Madsen drew a line under his domestic T20 career, with his last Vitality Blast appearance coming against Leicestershire Foxes. The red ball-only arrangement for 2027 is a direct consequence of that decision, focusing the remainder of his playing time on the County Championship.
Why is Madsen’s 2027 deal limited to red ball cricket?
Madsen’s return to the Derbyshire captaincy before the 2025 season set the tone for the phase of his career that followed. He skippered the side through both the 2025 and 2026 County Championship campaigns and struck two centuries during the 2026 summer, underlining that his first-class output remains competitive. Having relocated back to South Africa during the previous winter, Madsen said the structure of the new deal suits his personal circumstances.
“I often speak about how Derbyshire has become an adopted home for me and my family, and this new deal will allow us to spend time here, but also in South Africa, having moved back there last winter. I’d like to thank the Derbyshire supporters for always being behind the team and me. Their support has meant so much throughout my career and I still have the same hunger and excitement to perform for Derbyshire as I did when I first joined in 2009. While results didn’t always go the way we’d hoped in 2026, there were plenty of positive signs and I believe strongly in the quality we have within the group. I’m really excited about what we can achieve next summer and we’ll be determined to put ourselves in contention for promotion,” Madsen said in an official statement.
What does Mickey Arthur say about Madsen’s return?
Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire‘s Head of Cricket, pointed to Madsen’s 2026 form and his leadership qualities as the basis for extending his stay. Madsen captained the Derbyshire side that claimed the County Championship Division Two title in 2012, and his record of more than 24,000 runs and 52 centuries across all formats underlines the scale of his contribution to the club.
“Wayne’s leadership and skill remain key assets for us and I’m pleased he will be returning in 2027. “He scored two excellent centuries this summer, which shows the level he’s still capable of operating at in our red ball team. “Wayne is under no illusions, he knows he is closer to the end of his career than the start, but he will continue to give his all for Derbyshire for as long as he is playing and we could not be happier to have him,” Arthur said in the statement.
