Jasprit Bumrah’s first over against Pakistan on Sunday, February 15, turned out to be a dramatic event. India’s premier speedster conceded 13 runs but picked up two crucial wickets in front of a jam-packed R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Chasing a 176-run target, India got off to a fantastic start as Hardik Pandya dismissed the dangerous Sahibzada Farhan off the fourth ball of the innings. Pakistan were under pressure after the Baroda all-rounder didn’t give away a single run in the first over.
Bumrah, looking to build on the momentum built by Hardik in the first over, started with a short of length delivery to Saim Ayub. The young opener advanced to slog, but the ball swung away from his arc. Ayub only managed a top edge with his eyes closed, and the ball cleared third man for a maximum.
While such a result deflates a bowler’s spirit, an experienced campaigner like Bumrah knows how to bounce back. He bowled a full delivery on the next ball, and it swung in late towards Ayub’s pads. The Pakistani opener couldn’t get his bat down in time, and the ball wrapped him on the front pad as umpire Kumar Dharmasena didn’t take much time to raise his finger.
Babar Azam walked out to the middle and got off the mark a couple of deliveries later. Pakistan skipper Salman Agha hit a boundary before being dismissed off the next ball. This was an awful shot from Agha as he tried to flick over mid-wicket. The right-handed batter only managed a leading edge on the short of length delivery, which came in with the angle, and Hardik took a regulation catch after moving a few paces back at mid-on.
